  • 01/21/11--09:01: New Program for International Teaching Assistants (chan 1857311)
  • The Library’s Learning and Curriculum Support team, in conjunction with Teaching Support Services (TSS), is developing a new program to assist international and cross-cultural graduate students in carrying out their duties as teaching assistants. The Canadian classroom often poses pedagogical and cultural challenges to International/cross cultural TAs (ITA/CCTA). To help address these challenges, the team is developing a series of workshops, each covering a specific aspect of teaching in the Canadian context. The program’s one year funding came through the Learning Enhancement Fund (LEF), an initiative designed to boost undergraduate learning.

A pilot of the program will be launched during the Spring 2011 semester, in which a small number of international/cross cultural graduate students will be invited to participate. Based on outcomes emanating from the pilot, the program could be ready for implementation by Fall 2011.

The ITA/CCTA team has developed an online survey designed to capture vital information regarding the needs of International and cross-cultural graduate students who also hold (or will hold) a teaching assistant position. Results from the survey will assist the team in honing workshop content and tailoring the program to meet the needs of graduate students at Guelph.
Are you an International Teaching Assistant? Are you a Cross-cultural Graduate Student? If so, please take a moment to complete the following survey and ensure your voice is heard:

  • 01/31/11--09:01: GIS - The Perfect Mapping Tool (chan 1857311)
  • Whether you’re an undergraduate Geography student with a class assignment or working toward your graduate degree in Landscape Architecture, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) may be the perfect tool for you. GIS is a program which helps answer questions and solve problems by looking at your data in a way that is quickly understood and easily shared. GIS is supported by the Data Resource Centre (DRC) on the first floor of the Library and is offered to students and faculty.

More specifically, GIS allows you to view, analyze and interpret data in many ways that reveal spatial patterns in the form of maps, globes, reports and charts. The DRC offers GIS software, staff support from 10am-4pm and space for data storage. GIS is also offered in department labs, the Library and online for those interested in receiving GIS training certificates.

The Data Resource Centre holds a series of GIS workshops each semester for both undergraduate and graduate students. The first workshop this semester, “Planning a GIS”, will be held on March 1st. To access the workshops, visit the Student Affairs Registration System or GSLI.

  • 05/04/11--10:05: Two Lucky Survey Winners Claim Their Prizes (chan 1857311)
  • Two individuals were randomly chosen to win a $25 Hospitality Services gift card after filling out the Communications Survey released by the Library at the end of the winter semester. Sarah Fay Therrien-Green, a second year Human Kinetics major and Bobbi Henneker, a third year Philosophy major both frequent the Library on a regular basis and were enthusiastic to complete the survey.

The Library is very excited about the overwhelming response rate. There were over 2500 completed surveys from undergraduate and graduate students whose input will be very useful. The goal of the survey is to explore students’ use of communication tools and communication preferences in an attempt to develop new communication methods and to improve existing methods. The Communications Department plans to use the data collected for various inititatives over the coming months.
The Library constantly aims to improve the user experience and we appreciate your help. If you have questions or concerns regarding the survey, please contact Abbey Thompson, Communications Officer, at abbeytho@uoguelph.ca.

Wayne and Carol aim to establish a sustainable strategy and set of tools for the archival storage, preservation and accessibility of Ontario agri-environmental research data. They hope to create a system that allows users to easily submit data sets, discover data sets and repurpose data sets.

The project will receive $75,000 that Wayne and Carol plan to use to hire a data manager. They have begun work on the project this summer with the goal of hiring a data manager in early 2012.

  • 09/08/11--10:09: Expanding Your Reach: Electronic Thesis Submission (chan 1857311)
  • Electronic submission of theses is now required by the University of Guelph and is fully operational through the Library’s institutional repository, the Atrium. All theses will be published and made available on the World Wide Web through the Atrium which will be harvested and made available through the Library and Archives Canada (LAC) collections database.
As of January 2014, Library and Archives Canada (LAC) will no longer accept paper theses. The inclusion of electronic thesis submission makes Guelph’s graduate research widely available, in a timely fashion, and ensures that our valuable campus graduate work gets the exposure it deserves. Through this initiative we support Library and Archives Canada's vision of providing access to the academic research of Canadian graduate students and showcasing it around the world. Researchers from around the world will be able to access this work for decades.
The Library offers free Electronic Thesis & Dissertations: Hands-on submission workshops once a month. To sign up for a session, visit REG at http://www.uoguelph.ca/studentaffairs/reg/. For further questions, please email lib.research@uoguelph.ca.

  • 12/07/11--09:12: Library Awards Kobo eReader to Lucky Student (chan 1857311)
  • Despite the fact that the holidays are a time to give, the Library has awarded first year student, Gillian Blackett, a Kobo eReader for a completely different reason. Gillian, along with over 500 students, completed the Library Strategic Planning survey and entered for a chance to win a Kobo eReader. The survey was developed by the Library’s Strategic Planning Committee to assist the Library in determining future direction and priorities.
Gillian is a first year Human Kinetics major who uses the Library on a weekly basis during the semester and on a daily basis during exams. Gillian discovered the survey through a friend, who informed her of its purpose. When asked, “In what ways is the Library succeeding in meeting your needs as a student?”, Gillian replied, “I love that the Library offers food and beverages for users and stays open until 10:00pm – it enhances the studying experience . The Library was also helpful at the start of the semester when I was able to sign textbooks out on reserve prior to purchasing my own.” On the other hand when asked, “In what ways is the Library failing to meet your needs as a student?”, she replied, “Although there is ample seating during the semester, it quickly disappears during exam period. While Library seating is limited, I am able to find seating in other areas such as Creelman and the Atrium which also have extended hours during exams.”
To explore Gillian’s view of the future, she was asked, “Imagine that the year is 2016. How has the Library changed or evolved to become the Library of your dreams?”. Gillian responded, “It would be nice if all of the outlets and lights worked at different stations. It is very disappointing to find that you can’t charge your laptop when you finally find a seat.”
Gillian’s responses, as well as other students’ responses, will be a significant factor in the development of the Library’s Strategic Plan for 2012 – 2017. User input is greatly valued by the Library and is taken into consideration on a regular basis. Please keep your comments coming, email libcomm@uoguelph.ca with remarks or questions.
